MISSUS
SISSY'S ~ Mar.
7, 04 - We have a new food wagon out front, its called "Missus Sissy's",
great subs and soup. Missus Sissy's comes highly recommended by Paul, so
get out there and have a sub and soup.
Mike
Does It Again! ~ Mar.
7, 04 - I recently read an article about a person who wrote about their
experience they had when they took a ride a the only existing B-24 WWII
aircraft still flying. Well, check out this picture of our very own Mike
McMahon sitting in the copilots seat of "the only B-24 WWII aircraft still
flying". (I wonder how
long it took for that grin to wear off!) CLICK

Unique Flying
~ Mar.
7, 04 - Whenever
you stop in at the airport you never know what you're going to see. It
might be a single engine aircraft giving someone a ride, or a secret looking
black jet, or even a B-24 WWII bomber! Or
it might be an ultra-light aircraft taking to the skies with not much more
than a wing and a little something for propulsion. One late afternoon during
the week, I stopped by the airport for a few minutes and when I turned
around I saw someone with a wing and a motor taking to the skies...
FLIGHT SIMULATOR
~
Mar. 7, 04 - I have word that we have a flight simulator being setup in
the pilot training room. Flight simulators are a great way to gain some
valuable instrument practice time without the expense of of renting an
airplane. I'll get some pictures soon, so stay tuned...
Helicopter Flight
Department ~
Mar. 7, 04 - Want to learn how to fly a helicopter? As we continue to grow,
more services and an opportunity to experience all types of flying are
made available to you here at Ossipee Valley Aviation. Coming soon, we
will be offering a helicopter flight department in conjunction with C-R
HELICOPTERS. Keep watching this site as more information (and pictures)
become available.
Welcome Aboard!
~
Mar. 6, 04 - Welcome
to David Stock who recently joined our staff. David is a CFII with SES
Tailwheel and MEI
Picture
of the Week ~
Mar. 3rd, 04 - Skyhaven Traffic, Cessna 80657, five miles east at 2000,
landing Skyhaven. (Well
I was at 2000 until I pushed the seat back to take the picture. Can you
see the sod farm? It doesn't have to be CAVU to go for a ride).
No More Ice Airport
~
Mar. 3rd, 04 - The problem with an ice airport is warm weather! If you
didn't get a chance to land at the Alton Bay ice airport you might have
to wait until next year because of poor ice conditions. Call the office
for more info.
Messages, Comments
& Opinions ~
Mar. 1st, 04 - You asked for it and here it is! Some pilots have asked
about the possibility of having a message board on the site to share comments
and experiences. So, here it is. It's simple, not fancy but it should do
the job. If you have a unique experience you'd like to share with OVA visitors
feel free to try it out by clicking on "Messages" on the menu. If you have
a unique (or ordinary) picture you'd like to share, send it to me by email,
or leave it at the desk with Toni.
Heart of the Glass
Cockpit ~
Feb. 29, 04 - More than just a couple of computer screens? How about the
"attitude and heading reference system (AHRS)! According to an article
I just read, the system uses "solid state" gyros. That's "solid state"
as in computer chips. As most pilots know, the gyroscope is or was the
heart of the attitude indicator, but that appears to be changing. The attitude
information displayed on the computer screen is actually computed and calculated
data. The system uses "3-D magnetometry (measurement of changes in the
Earth's magnetic field), and 3-D air data information to compute the aircraft's
attitude". If you turn the system off and move the airplane, then turn
the system back on, it will tell you where you are and the attitude of
the aircraft, even in the air. The article makes a joke about not doing
it in the air because it takes about 45 seconds to warm up.
(Good idea to keep the conventional backup gyro attitude indicator in good
shape). All I want for Christmas is a Skylane with a G1000. In the meantime,
I'll keep studying the GPS manual for 43G.
MORE
PICS FROM ALTON BAY ICE AIRPORT! ~
Feb. 28, 04 - Sounds like pilots
and friends are having a lot of fun at the Alton Bay Ice Airport. Here's
some more pics sent in by Paul. You can also get a lot of information about
the ice airport at the AANH website.
Congratulations!
~
Feb. 24, 04 - Congratulations
to our solo pilots, Ben Disesa in 657, and Bruce Emerson in 93G. Congratulations
also to Craig Howland and Leigh MacDonald on receiving their private pilot
certificate. All these pilots are students of our CFII Pete Seavey.
OPEN
HOUSE! ~
Feb. 19, 04 - Come and join us as we celebrate our THIRD ANNIVERSARY, Saturday
March 13 in the Big Hangar! Click on the small picture for more information.
Congratulations!
~
Feb. 16, 04 - Congratulations to Mary Current on receiving her private
pilot license. NOW WHAT?
Her
Private pilot's license allows her to fly anywhere she wants, day or night.
Now, she can bring passsengers with her on every flight. How many people
can she bring? As many as she wants! Actually, the answer has to be calculated.
A Cessna Skyhawk has four seats, but you can't take three New England Patriots
line backers for a ride at the same time. After the Private certificate,
she may add on ratings such as an instrument rating, or continue on for
a Commercial certificate or more! The Instrument rating will allow you
to fly into clouds. The Commercial Certificate will allow you to fly for
hire. With this you can do power line patrol, photo flights, surveying
flights, scenic flights and more!
Alton
Bay Ice Runway ~
Feb. 16, 04 - Here's another great
pic from Mike McMahon. This picture was taken at Alton Bay where you can
get a ride from one our planes. There's two sizes here; large and super
size.
MOONEY GOES GLASS!
~
Feb. 15, 04 - Sounds like everybody is doing it! The glass cockpit seems
to be sweeping GA. Have you noticed that they all seem to be hanging on
to a few of the traditional type instruments? The
Attitude Indicator, Airspeed Indicator, and Altimeter appear to have kept
a place on the panel but, not the usual place of honor in the center and
top in front of the pilot. Some manufacturers have given them a respectable
place in the center top or center bottom. Probably the most notable being
the Cirrus. See " News and Info" page for more...
Cirrus Glass Cockpit
~
Feb. 15, 04 - Out of all the cockpit changes
taking place these days, Cirrus gets the "Wow" for the most dramatic. At
first glance, you might say, "Where's the steering wheel?" Wait a minute,
that dashboard is an instrument panel! And look at where the "Attitude
Indicator" and its companion have been located! Cirrus seems to have found
a place for the more traditional radio stack.
AOPA
GIVES AWAY A WACO ~
Feb. 11, 04 - The winner of the AOPA Waco biplane was not me! Ok, I'm a
little disappointed but hey, OVA has three Skyhawks, a Cherokee, a Piper
Aztec, and a taildragger to choose from! I think I'll go for a ride in
43G to make me feel better...
ICE
RUNWAY ~
Feb. 10, 04 - Take a ride at Alton Bay, airplane ride that is! Yes, there's
an ice runway there and you just might see one of our planes sitting on
the ice waiting to take you for a ride (on and ) above Lake Winnipesaukee.
POT
LUCK SUPPER ~
Feb. 9, 04 - Jim Dubois tells me he's going to have a Pot Luck Supper in
the pilots lounge, Feb. 18,
Wed. 6:00pm - 8:30pm.
He used to have them every year a while ago and he's had some request to
have another one. For more information contact Jim at the office or at
Jrdubois2@aol.com.
THE GLASS COCKPITS
ARE COMING ~
Feb. 7, 04 - The talk around the
hanger these days occasionally focuses on the next major cockpit change
that's coming to general aviation, the "Glass Cockpit". Sounds like Cessna
has a deal with Garmin to start offering in the 182 models in 2004. At
first glance, I said to myself that this change is something more than
just replacing the round mechanical instruments with a flat panel computer
display. And then it hit me, the radio stack is gone! Click on the picture
to to check it out.
 Another
Great Pic ~
Feb. 04, 04 - Here's a great shot of the airport sent in by Mike McMahon.
Obviously a digital camera, he took in from 3500 feet. Normally I'd just
put a 640 x 480 version on the site, but this pic has so much detail I've
included the large version for you to gaze at.
Picture
of the Week ~
Jan. 29, 04 - Keeping our fleet of planes ready to go requires constant
attention. Sometimes you'll see a plane in the hanger not because there's
something wrong with it, but because of a required 100 hr inspection. Here's
a pic of 93G getting the 100 hour treatment.
 The
TFR was BACK,
BUT Did NOT INCLUDE SKYHAVEN! ~
Jan. 28, 04 - For the official TFR picture go to the "FAA
TFR LIST". There's also a link in the right column on the home page
under the AOPA TFR map. This one has a double 10nm no fly zone in it. Although
the FAA map is of poor quality is gives you the basic idea. However, if
you fly anywhere near the TFR, I suggest you know exactly where the edge
of the TFR is. The AOPA
site has a list of airports affected by the TFR. Click on the small
maps for examples of the TFR.
THE TFR'S ARE
COMING, THE TFR'S ARE COMING! ~
Jan. 25, 04 - Here's a heads up according to AOPA. Sounds like
we'll be having a TFR again this Thursday, Jan. 29th in the Manchester
area. Usually, this does not mean you can't fly, butt... you need to follow
precedures... you
vill follow prroceechures. Here's what the TFR around Manchester looked
like the last time the president was around. Take a close look where Skyhaven
lined up on the TFR last time. Click
here for some helpful hints. Click here to
see the Intercept Procedures.
OVA Airshow Fly-In
August 2004 ~
Jan. 21, 04 - We're planning another weekend in August for a flying spectacular.
Click on the airshow icon on the right for more
information. Email Paul to sign-up on the airshow committee
jaime@worldpath.net
FAA Air Safety
Program ~
Jan. 21, 04 - Check out the Air Safety Program
schedule for February.
Private Pilot
Ground School ~
Jan. 19, 04 - We're having another ground school for becoming a private
pilot. There's a sign-up sheet in the office. The classes will be conducted
by CFI Steve Kolacz. Click
here for more information.
PRE-HEAT ~
Jan. 19, 04 - How do we keep the aircraft heated and ready to go? Well,
one of the ways we do
it is with a small army of portable heaters. These heaters have their own
gas powered generators that provided electricity for safe dependable heat.
Heating elements are placed in the cowl and in the aircraft itself. We
also have special heaters on the engines which heats the oil that warms
all the internal components.
NACO ~
Jan. 17, 04 -- Are your aeronautical charts up to date? As the internet
becomes older, web sites keep appearing everywhere. Here's another site
that's real handy. It's an FAA site called the National
Aeronautical Charting Office.
They publish and distribute U. S. government civil aeronautical charts
and flight information publications. Click
here to go to their site, or click
here to check aeronautical chart dates.
5
Miles East! ~
Jan. 12, 2004 -- Looking out the window from 93G five miles east at 2000
feet, landing Skyhaven... Once you get your pilots license you get to see
things from a different perspective.
De-Iced! ~ Jan.
12, 2004 -- What's the blue bottle in the entry way? To keep the planes
ready to go the wing surfaces sometimes need de-icing just like the large
commercial jets. When you schedule one of our planes they're pre-heated
and properly de-iced and ready to go when you arrive.
Congratulations!
~
Jan. 12, 2004 -- Congratulations to Mike McMahon on receiving his multi-commercial
instrument rating and Cathy Kennedy on her instrument rating with our CFI
Steve Kolacz.
Threat level lowered
to "yellow," but airport security concerns still high ~
Jan. 10, 2004 -- AOPA said yesterday the Homeland Security Department this
afternoon lowered the national threat level from a "high" to "elevated"
(or "code yellow") risk of terrorist attack- but "code orange" restrictions
remain in place for airports and airspace. Go to AOPA for more info, or
click on the ADVISORY icon in the right column.
AirShow 2004 ~
Jan. 8, 2004 -- Plans are under way for a major Airshow fly-in in August
2004. For more information call the office. To volunteer on the airshow
committee click
here to email Paul.
Congratulations!
~
Jan. 6, 2004 -- Warren tells me we have another private pilot! Congratulations
