| FALL FLYING
~ Oct 17, 2003 It's that time of the year again. The leaves
are turning and the wind is blowing. I might add that the final approach
to 33 can get what I would call "a little squirrelly". With the fall winds,
like a squirrel, one minute you're going one way, the next moment you're
going another way. A peek at the wind sock on final will give you a clue
on what to expect. Sometimes the windsock points down the runway and sometimes
it points across and sometimes it goes back a forth. Fall flying is a great
time of the year to go flying and the added boost from the cool dry air
and wind gives you performance levels you can't get in the summer hot humid
days. It's a good time to tune up your flying skills. If you haven't been
out in the wind for a while be sure to call your instructor for a tune-up.

TFR PoP-Ups - Sept. 24
"Ever hear of PoP Up windows
that popup when you're visiting web sites? They pop up unexpectedly, usually
when you're trying to do something. Well, TFR's are similar to pop up windows.
You never know when they're going to show up. So, be sure to check with
FSS for the latest
info. Did you hear about the New York TFR? It just popped up.
WebTools - Sept 22 03
- In case you haven't
noticed, our home page has many Internet links to help you get the info
you need about the weather and flying. Links like "the current weather",
"winds aloft", US satellite, TFR status are all here at your finger tips.
Try them out. They'll be all appearing on the soon to be updated "Flight

you a full display of METARS of the US that you can zoom and interrogate.
National Air Tour makes extended visit
at AOPA home field Sept. 22 "The
National Air Tour
completed the East Coast legs of its round-robin journey with an extended
stop at the home of AOPA headquarters, Frederick Municipal Airport. Aircraft
started landing at Frederick Sunday afternoon, just a couple of days behind
stormy Isabel. The visit recognized AOPA's contributions to aviation for
64 years of the 100-year history of flight." You can see Dick Jackson's
S-39 on the AOPA
story about the tour. You can see more pictures at the Centennial
Page and also the "Antique Aircraft" page.
AOPA meets with FAA regional administrators
Sept. 23 "AOPA
senior staff met with all of the FAA's regional administrators in Washington
recently to discuss key AOPA member issues and provide FAA's regional leaders
with a national perspective on GA issues. AOPA highlighted concerns including
threats of closure at general aviation airports around the country and
stressed that AOPA is looking to the FAA to maintain its lead in protecting
those assets." see AOPA for the more info...

More L-39 stuff
Sept 18, 2003 So we're cruising along at 3000 ft at 250 knots, and
I ask Dan, "Hey Dan, what would happen if we opened the throttle right
about now?". "Well Bob, we'd be going over 400 knots in a very short period
of time." Somehow, I got the message we weren't going to do that today,
but the thought was exciting!
With
the helmet and headset on, the ride is extremely quite and on this particular
day very smooth. Gentle movements on the stick return a nice obedient response
from the jet that says "Your wish is my command." I was told that riding
in a jet fighter can be very boring (smooth and gentle), however, that
can all change with this (barrel roll), and this (loop), and this (punching
vertically through a cloud layer and leveling off upside down), and this
(roll back upright with a little dirt from my shoe whizzing by my face),
and this (jamming the stick in the side of the cockpit causing the jet
to corkscrew threw the air), and this... and that... ok,ok I get the picture.
Ever try to look up in the cockpit while you're pulling 3 g's? Feels like
someone's standing on your head.

18, 2003 ~ Thank God it didn't have the 45 ft surge wave one meteorologist
said could have. The news this evening switched from emphasis on the wind,
which dropped into the 90's and continues to drop as it moves across land,
to the dangers of flood from the rain. By the way, the clouds over New
England this evening were actually an extension of the clouds from Isabel.
Does that mean I flew in a hurricane today? LittleBrook traffic Piper 11R
is on final for 12.
East Coast aircraft owners take note:
Hurricane Isabel is on the move - Sept.
12, fr. AOPA
Though currently well east-northeast of Puerto Rico, Hurricane Isabel
the strongest of the Atlantic season so far appears headed for the
southeastern United States. With 160-mph winds, Isabel is classified as
a Category 5 hurricane. That's the highest storm ranking, and the same
ranking given to Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
What's it like to fly in the L-39?
Sept.
14, 03 ~ Just ask the winners from the Centennial Raffle. Thanks to Sarah
and Mike I have some nice pictures of the resident black jet. I'll put
some up on the web site shortly.

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION: August
23, 03 It was a beautiful weekend for aircraft activities and just plain
having fun. Did you know kids from 8 to 17 were able to get a free
plane ride on Sunday! All you had to do was just sign up for the "Young
Eagles" program and away you went.
Be
sure to check out the updated Centennial WebPage
with over 250 pictures I took over the weekend on the Centennial event.
Which
aircraft was your favorite? Don't remember all the planes you saw?
Go to the Centennial page to see the pictures for a reminder. Thanks
again for everyone that helped make the weekend a success.
FAA
Safety Seminars
August 30, 03 ~ For
your convenience, I've added the FAA safety icon to the right hand column
that includes the latest dates from the Portland Me. office. If the links
stay intack I'll keep it on the home page for quick reference. On occasion,
the seminars are in our neighborhood, like the one coming up at Hampton
airport Airfield Café Wednesday, Sept 10, 2003 7:00pm and 9:00pm.
Dave Pepple will be talking about aircraft air worthiness. Should be interesting.
WE HAVE A WINNER! August
17, 03 We had a great weekend for our Centennial Celebration. Congratulations
to John Miller, the winner of the ride in the L-39 Jet aircraft. How many
times do you get to take a ride in a jet fighter? Other winners and information
about the Centennial weekend will be coming shortly on our Centennial Page.

12, 03 More pictures submitted by Jim Dubois of Dick Jackson's Sikorsky...
check them out on the "Antique Aircraft" page.
Congratulations!
August 8th 03 ~ Our student pilots have four aircraft to choose from. If
a low wing aircraft is what strikes your fancy than take a look at our
Cherokee 140 on the aircraft picture page. This time, Pete Seavey and Steve
Kolacz have teamed up for Ty Conklin who just soloed in one of our high
wing aircraft 93G. Congratulations Ty and have fun flying on to your private
pilot requirements.
50/50 RAFFLE!
August 8th 03 Did
you get your RAFFLE TICKETS for a ride in a jet? We'll be having all kinds
of raffles during our weekend celebration, even a 50/50 raffle Saturday
and Sunday. How much can you win? Imagine, winning a ride in a jet fighter,
paying for a ride in a glider, winning the raffle and coming home with
a pocket full of money! Don't forget to mark your calendar for the "Centennial
Celebration".
Congratulations!
August 1st 03 ~ 93G
does it again! Congratulations to Jacob Moore! Jacob has the distinction
of having two CFI's endorsing his solo display in the office, thanks to
Dan Heeter and Steve Kolacz.
GPS
July 28 03 ~ Are you familiar with the GPS
in 43G? If you're not, then stay tuned for the pilot training page. The
KLN94 manual is pretty comprehensive and has a lot of information. That's
why it will be available shortly on the training page.
Congratulations! July
28 03 ~ What's after the solo flight? Just ask Tyler Jackson, Meghan
Lindsay, and Rob Johnson. They recently received their Private Pilot License.
How about after you received your Private Pilots License? Just as Eric
Kobb! Eric just received his instrument rating and can now go were vfr
pilots can only dream about. Congratulations and good luck to our pilots.
July
19 03 Checkout the latest update on the "Antique Aircraft" page. I've added
some rare pics of Dick's S-39 along with a departing black biplane
Congratulations!
July 16 03 Pete Seavey does it again! Another first
solo for Andrew Plummer. This time it's N80657. This is an all around nice
aircraft. Not only can you learn to fly in it, but after you get your license,
you can take all your friends for a ride. But don't forget to do your "weight
& balance" before jumping in. Good luck to Andrew!
RARE
& UNUSUAL July 15 03 So I decided to take 43G
for a ride around the pee patch, or is that pea patch? Anyway, while I'm
preflighting I come around the tail of the aircraft and what do I see?
It's a bird... it's a plane... no, it's a boat... it's all the above, and
a rare one at that. Actually, it's a special bird that Dick Jackson's been
working on that originally came from the deep woods of Alaska.

July
14.03 June 1, 2003 Good
luck to whoever wins the ride in the L-39 Albatros. May the force be with
you. "G" force that is! Someone the other day asked me if there's flight
controls in the rear seat. I said yes, it's the co-pilots seat. There's
plenty of L-39 websites on the net if your so inclined. Here's a cute one
about a pilot who would rather fly a L-39 than do anything else! ...
