225 Pancake Breakfast Cancelled ~ 2-17-08
- Here's an email forward from Jerry Peterson: HI All, I am sorry
to say that the Sunday breakfast/lunch Young Eagle fund raiser this weekend
up at Alton Bay will be cancelled. MORE...
Special
Notice! 2-15-08
- A news update
from Glen Horne about this weekend:
We
are canceling all events for this weekend due to ice conditions. There
is currently 6-8 inches of slush and snow on top of the ice, and we still
heve the soft spots with a layer of water in between. We are not going
to be able to clean this up and likely this is the end of the season for
the Ice Runway as well.
Thank-You,
Glen
Taylorcraft
On Ice ~ 2-11-08
- Did you get a chance to sneak into the Ice Airport before we had to close
the runway? No? Too bad... but at least Mike and Glen were able to make
some last minute inspections with the Taylorcraft. Here's a note from Mike:
"I had to go up to the lake Saturday. Runways was "ok" but taxi way was
awful. We ended up closing the runway. However, we did manage to get the
skis on the taylorcraft and both glen and I got current."

Notice! 2-9-08
- A news update
from Glen Horne:
THE RUNWAY IS CLOSED
due to water and then thin ice accumulations on top of the ice. It created
a very dangerous situation for taxiing and in some places landing. All
the green/yellow area of the iceport are extremely dangerous with a thin
layer of ice, then in some cases, a foot of water, then 16 inches of ice!!!!!!!!

Special
Notice! 2-7-08
- This news just in from Glen Horne, that the airport is temporarily closed
for now until they can plow it again. This has certainly been a strange
winter. Lately, the normal routine is to get up in the morning, clear the
snow, go to work, clear the snow again, take a break and start all over
again.
Get-Together
~ 2-5-08
- The latest information called in from Paul yesterday afternoon
is that the Fire & Ice Get-Together will he held on February
17th at the Alton Bay Ice Airport.
By the looks of the pictures sent in by Paul Fleming, Glen and his helpers
created a runway and parallel taxiway that rivals the precision of any
runway at a class C airport. Mark your calendar, and come and see for yourself.
Pictures
From Paul Fleming ~ 2-3-08
- Do you have some great shots of the ice airport you would like to share?
Send them in and we'll post them right here at the Alton Bay Ice Airport
web page. Last week Paul Fleming took these pics. Looks like he was heading
down wind for runway One.
The
Ice Airport Is Open ~ 1-28-08
- Here's a report from Glen Horne...
Alton Bay Ice Port is open. It is plowed 2500 feet long and 80 feet
wide, there is back taxiway, and parking area also plowed. The ice has
a layer of snow thst we left on it to keep it from getting to Zambonied
condition, we’re hoping that it will work. Tail wheel pilot’s should know
that it is there, and use caution. The parking area and parts of the taxiway
are fairly rough due to other traffic when surface was slushy, so again,
use appropriate speed and caution when taxiing.
We’re
looking at the weekend of the 16th and 17th of February for the Fire and
Ice Get-Together. Looks like the Alton Rec Dept is going to do something
on the 17th, and we’ll likely have the Get-Together that day. EAA 225 will
be having a pancake breakfast that morning, and I think they’ll be doing
burgers and dogs later. We’ll keep you posted.
Glen
UPDATE
1-07-08: Here's a report from Glen Horne...
The runway is currently is closed. The ice is still too thin to get
a plow truck out onto, there is some snow on top of the ice, and water
appears to be on the ice, but beneath the snow. With the warm weather and
potential rain, we will not be likely to be able to open very soon. We’ll
keep everyone up to date as best we can, and set a date for the Get-Together
when we know there will be ice enough to do so.
Glen
~ 11-10-07
- In an email from Paul, he talks about upcoming plans for the Alton
Bay Ice Airport along with ideas on improving runway conditions and plans
for a Get-Together called "Fire And Ice." We will keep you posted on the
status
of the airport and news about events and activities. We are also currently
seeking help for plowing, if interested please call or stop by Ossipee
Valley Aviation and talk to Paul or Glen. We will need all the help we
can get. So please!! if you have a plow truck, please stop by and see us.

In New England if you really like the summers more than the winters it's
not considered polite to talk about the winter in the middle of summer.
But for those of us who enjoy all the seasons of New England, here's some
news about Alton Bay. Glen Horne tells me that the Ice Airport now has
it's own web address which is "www.flyaltonbay.com".
Also, there will be a phone number 603-332-9098 that will have an answering
machine for current condition and information.
Alton
Bay Ice Airport ~ 3-13-07
- The latest hangar talk about the ice airport was that Glen tried to push
the snow with his truck but the snow refused to move. And, with the latest
warming trend, the lakes and ponds might be loosing their ice covering
in the not to distant future. I drove by the ice airport last Friday and
although it was a beautiful sunny day in the mid 20's, it was clear that
the snow had claimed victory over the ice runway. We'll keep you posted...
Alton
Bay Ice Airport ~ 3-3-07
- The
ice airport was looking pretty good recently due to the hard work of Glen
Horne and Kenn Ortmann and his helpers with their plowing equipment on
the ice. Taking advantage of their fine work is CFI Mike MacMahon and his
student pilot. Check out these great shots taken by Mike of the ice airport.
UPDATE
2-18-07: Here's a report from Glen Horne...
Alton
is open again. It took a bit of art work this time, but the runway
is
straighter this time. Thanks to all who helped in one way or another.
I
had 2 other people plowing with me, Ken Ortmann and Carleton Worster,
and
Alan Bald donated a pair or chains for the truck so I cold break it
open
and push the cement-like drifted snow.

Landing
On The Ice ~ 2-11-07
- Thanks
to Todd Warfield for this great picture taken from 50J. Wondering
what's it's like to land on the ice? Just ask Todd. If you'd like to try
it but may have some concerns than give us a call and our experienced instructors
can brief you on any extra precaution to help you enjoy your flying experience.
If you've been flying in the winter and on icy runways than you've got
a pretty good idea what's involved. Needless to say, hard braking is not
an option, so your short field landing skills will come in handy.
How
Not To Land On The Ice ~ 2-11-07
- Here's
an interesting video sent in by Carl Tyler. He was at the Alton Bay Ice
Airport Saturday and had his video camera with him and manage to catch
a landing that was... shall we say, less than perfect... but had a dramatic
correction. If you're used to landing on a big black runway with
big white lines down the middle... well, some folks may need a little practice
on final approach. A little practice at a small airport before trying the
ice might be helpful, or better yet, give one of our instructors a call
and make your first ice landing with confidence.
2-6-07:
Have
you seen the latest notams!
Check
it out, it says that the airport is open. Here's what the notam looks like,
"Alton Bay NH [B18]: February NOTAM #9 issued by Bangor ME [BGR]
Plow 2500 long effective from February 03rd, 2007 at 06:15 AM EST (0702031115)"
Pilots can call the office
at Ossipee Valley Aviation, 332-0005, for information.
We'll add more information
as it becomes available.
